As I see it, there are 6 main axes to build coalitions and rally around in this fight: 1) legalizing all marijuana-related activity 2) legalizing or decriminalizing personal recreational use of marijuana 3) legalizing medical use of marijuana 4) legalizing hemp, which has important industrial uses of its own, and which would also help open the door for marijuana 5) organizing around issues related to civil liberties, democratic rights, and prison reform 6) demanding the U.S. stop supplying military aid to places like Mexico and Colombia under the pretext of fighting drugs There are already well-organized groups addressing some of these issues, e.g. NORML for 1-3, the ACLU for 5, etc. What would REALLY make the government stand up and take notice would be if we could get the labor UNIONS to become involved here. My final thought is that your emphasis on the United States doesn't seem to have any strategic value and hurts your cause. There are plenty of people from Canada, to Mexico, to the UK, to Vietnam, who would be valuable allies in this struggle and we should be actively seeking to bring them into the movement too. it is ridiculous that alchahol and cigarettes are legal (which they should be) and pot is not. who ever incited any violence, wrecked a car, or died directly from using pot? no one.
